        Black Ash

        Name : Black Ash 

        Family : Oleaeceae  

        Leaf : spear-shaped; finely toothed edges; leaves are opposite; with 7 to 11 leaves on each branch 

        Bark : grey; scaly; detaches easily when rubbed lightly 

        Fruit : called samara; winged seed that is longer than it is wide; in clusters 

        Uses : flooring; sports equipment; tool handles; cabinetwork; railroad crossbeams 

         

        Did you know that if the trunk of the Black Ash is struck repeatedly, the wood can be peeled off in long strips alons the growth ring? First Nations used them to make basket.
